Our Story

48 years of hope, recovery, and one addict helping another.

Since 1978

Step One NA was founded in 1978, making it the oldest Narcotics Anonymous group in Tarrant County. For nearly five decades, this group has opened its doors to anyone seeking recovery from addiction.

Located on Benbrook Highway in Fort Worth, Step One has been a cornerstone of the local recovery community. Thousands of people have walked through these doors โ€” some on their worst day, some celebrating decades of clean time, and everything in between.

How It Works

The group runs on the same principles that have guided NA since its founding: one addict helping another. No professionals, no fees, no agenda โ€” just people who understand addiction sharing their experience, strength, and hope.

There's no president, no boss, no one running the show. The group conscience decides how things go. Every voice matters โ€” including yours. That's the tradition that has kept these doors open since 1978.

The Twelve Traditions

NA groups are guided by the Twelve Traditions, which ensure that the group stays focused on its primary purpose: carrying the message to the addict who still suffers. The traditions protect the group from outside influences, internal conflicts, and anything that might distract from the simple act of one addict helping another.

At Step One, we take the traditions seriously. That's why there are no dues or fees, no outside affiliations, and no opinions on outside issues. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using.

What Makes Step One Different

Step One isn't a treatment center, a therapy group, or a 12-step class. It's a fellowship. That means:

  • No dues or fees โ€” ever. NA is self-supporting through member contributions, but no one is ever turned away for inability to pay.
  • No sign-ups or registration โ€” you don't need to call ahead, fill out forms, or give your real name.
  • Anonymity is protected โ€” what you hear here, who you see here, stays here. Always.
  • Open meetings โ€” anyone can attend. You don't need to be an addict. Family members, students, and concerned friends are welcome.
  • Court and probation friendly โ€” the chairperson can sign verification slips at the end of any meeting. No judgment, no questions.

Still Here

48 years later, the doors are still open. The coffee is still hot. And there's still a seat with your name on it.

Whether you're walking through the door for the first time or coming back after years away, you belong here. New? Here's what to expect โ†’
